Workshop: Create Using Varied Textures & Colors with Locker Hooking

Explore using different materials to achieve textured looks and patterns

Instructor: Theresa Pulido

Locker hooking has been around for a little over a century. Its origins can be traced to the hooking of wool rugs in Ireland, England and Australia. It was also widely used in the U.S. during the depression for making wool and rag rugs and the technique was often called “Anchored Loop”. It’s a great modern day craft for recycling, has varied uses, and is versatile enough to be used with different materials—from fabric remnants and clothing to plastic and fibers. Quilting and sewing enthusiasts can put their stash or leftovers to good use with this versatile rug hooking craft. Theresa’s designs include rugs, accessories and some wearable items. She uses vibrant hand-dyed fabrics and fibers and will have an inspirational variety of locker hooked designs and materials on display. A drawing to win one of her autographed books, plus locker hooking kits and supplies will be held at the end of the class.

In this workshop, you’ll explore creating with different canvas types and using different materials for your own unique designs:

-Preparing materials: Choosing to cut or tear fabric, to recycle or use new material.

-Combining fabric and fibers and using altered loop lengths for textural effects.

-Finding inspiration in textile, quilt patterns and graphic designs.

-How to make color schemes come together in your own designs.

-Creating designs—both geometric and curved shapes on canvas.

Theresa Pulido is the author of Hook, Loop & Lock, and Locking Loops—two books that offer illustrated, step-by-step instructions, projects and patterns, plus guidance on using varied materials to create with vibrant colors and textures.
